Located less than three blocks from Carilion Children’s Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House cares for 700 families a year on average. The House provides much more than the comforts of home for families who must stay with us during such a difficult time. Our House allows families an opportunity to meet other guests, experiencing similar situations, and share thoughts and information. The support system formed by families staying at the Ronald McDonald House is an invaluable resource.
When a family has a sick child, the last thing they need to worry about is where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will rest their head at night. The Ronald McDonald House allows families to focus on what’s most important, getting their child the vital treatment they need.
Built in 1984, it offers families a home-away-from-home consisting of 18 bedrooms with private baths and 2 queen size-beds. The House also has 2 large dining rooms, laundry facilities, a playroom, a library, and an outdoor playground. There’s even a Magic Room! But most importantly there is an atmosphere of care and support.
Each bedroom has two queen size beds, private bathroom, television, telephone and alarm clock. The House is equipped with Wi-Fi Internet access and a computer, available for guest use, located in the library. An evening meal is provided buffet style from 5-6:30 PM by volunteer groups for all house guests. Guests are able to prepare their own meals at other times in the guest kitchen.
Families staying at the House may make a donation, but no one is ever turned away for an inability to pay.
The Ronald McDonald House Family Room serves parents and primary caregivers who have a child in the hospital. This private area is especially accommodating for those who may not meet distance requirements to be eligible to stay at the House.
Open in 2007, the Ronald McDonald Family Room is located on the 14th floor of Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital; it serves as a respite area for adult family members and guests of hospitalized children. In close proximity to the Neonatal Intensive Care and only a quick elevator ride from Pediatric Services, the Family Room provides a home-like setting where families can relax without leaving the hospital.
Staffed by volunteers, this space is available 7 days a week from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm. On occasion, the room may be closed due to inclement weather conditions.
Visitors are asked to complete a brief registration card and sign in each time they visit thereafter.
