By collecting the pop tabs from aluminum cans and bringing them to Ronald McDonald House Southwest Virginia, you can help us continue to carry out our mission of supporting families with a sick or injured child.

Every spring, Ronald McDonald House Southwest Virginia hosts Tab Top Week, a weeklong community collection event celebrating the impact of our Tab Top Program. Schools, businesses, community groups, and individuals collect aluminum tabs throughout the year and drop them off during the designated week as part of a friendly recycling competition. Together, these small tabs make a big difference by helping support families staying at the House while their children receive medical care. Tab Top Week is a fun and meaningful way for our community to come together, give back, and show that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.

FAQ

Where do I bring my tabs?

Ronald McDonald House at 2224 Jefferson Street SE, Roanoke VA 24014 between 8am – 8pm or place them in the tab top house outside near our parking lot. Should you like a tour of our House when you drop off your donations, please call (540) 857-0770 prior to your visit to schedule.

No, you can bring your tab tops anytime of the year. If you want to be a part of the tab top competition then please bring them that week to be weighed.

Tabs are more sanitary and easier to store than whole cans in our limited space.

We do not advise mailing as postage is more than the value of the tabs. If you live further out call the house to see if there is a local drop off near you.

You can donate aluminum tabs from:

  • Soda cans
  • Sparkling water cans
  • Soup cans
  • Pet food cans
  • Energy drinks
  • Other aluminum containers

If the tab is aluminum, we can recycle it!

We recommend avoiding:

  • Milk jugs
  • Water bottles
  • Glass containers

Wide-opening containers are easiest for collecting and emptying tabs.

Volunteers help sort and organize the tabs and then we take them for recycling.

Absolutely! Tab collections are a fun and easy community service project. Many schools and businesses create friendly competitions and decorate collection containers to encourage participation.
